ZOMBIE CENTRAL

CONNECT - DISCUSS - SURVIVE

Because we were taking over a weapons thread with this discussion.  I've of the mindset that vs a zombie, you could use just about any "extream sports" ppe and have that be your armor, of course that doesnt take into account the fact that other humans with guns might be comin for your stuff? thoughts?

i have a lot of impact style armor from hockey to motocross. but i dont think that i would end up using it. i do have a us army plate carrier for some bullet proofing, but the hole thing it to make your self not grab-able. the tighter your clothing is, the less chance you have of it being grabbed or snagged on something.
with wearing tight hockey armor over your clothes its possible to have that effect.
but i just thought of one thing... HEAT! what ever you wear, its going to add to your body temp. so the more you move the more heat will build up and you wont be able to get rid of it, until you strip down.
just from playing paintball outside, if i have anything more then a shirt and my vest, im overheating and sweating like hell. and im the type of guy that loves the heat of summer.

if anything at all, i would suggest something that will guard your eyes and mouth from getting blood splatter on you. as having it enter any part of you being our first risk of getting infected

If you Need Armor I think your best bet is leather.

just what i was gonn say jesse

I'll take modern synthetics over leather anyday, because, leather armor, not that terribly common, and much more cost prohibitive, and if your worried about heat, yah modern synthetic fibers are where its at.

dude i was talking about modern synthetic fibers, its all hot.

Well aware thank you, but people ware this kinda ppe doing vigorus activity in hot climates and, the trade off of protection for some heat retention is worthwhile to me. and they would deffinatly beat the crap out of hardedend leather from a heat retention standpoint, not to mention long term wearability. that was my point, not that you were in error

ok. i think the leather they meant may have been race bike armor and not old stuff. leather, kevlar, plastic with venting.
but trading protection for heat in combat i dont see very good. its going to wear you down faster. and this combat isnt like the army where you can take cover. you are up against a relentless opfor that doesnt stop for anything.

Leather is light and Strong. It isnt all that hot, bikers (including my dad) wear full gear in the summer and are fine.

yes, it does have venting, but thats because the wind goes through while riding. my biker jacket gets hot when it gets above 15c, im guessing around 60f since im in celcius

I say BDU ripstop fabric. Its tough and durable, and its light weight so you can wear it all day. As for any type of supplemental armor stay away from any kind of football pads, and go for the lax stuff. Why it is light weight and is not as bulky. And if it can stop a ball that goes at 100 + speeds, I highly doubt that normal human bight force (remember zombies are just like us, nothing supper about them) will go through it. Also the advantages of a BDU is that they are not all that hot when you move around with it on. I live on a small farm next to the Potomac river. Some days it will get to be 93 degrees out with 80% humidity, and wearing all of it ill go bunny hunting and ill feel fine. But the mask part is still strange. If you have a gas mask it will greatly restrict your visibility, but you'll be safe from taking in zombie guts. Or you could have one of those clear plastic masks they use for grinding. But it can get all clouded up with blood so your visibility goes down, and its is not as through in protecting your face from the underside so anything can still go through there.

i wouldnt trust a grind shield to stop liquid.,i work in a factory. modern gas masks are pretty good for not fogging. and the industrial full face one is ment to be used in confined spaces (warm-hot) while working. now the filters arent as good as the military ones, but are still safer then a dust mask, which is just stupid.
either way, you need somethign that covers your mouth, nose and eyes. plus any other holes, cuts and scratches you have on you.
i doubt that skin contact will result in an infection, but anything leading to ingestion (entering the body) will.

If its a bodily fluid transmissible, skin contact is a suirfire way to get it if they've got wounds or your spraying gore around, anyone that doesnt belive me put lemon juice in a bowl and put your hand in it or just put some in your hand and rub it across your arm, , if it stings at all you've got an opening in your skin,. bodily fluid isolation is going to be a must, and i think it's what'll get most people moreso than any zombie bite. Hep C can live on a surface outside the body for 4 days. you could kill a zombie and later touch a wall with a sore on your hand and count yourself among the living dead.

Also zombies arent going to be the only things out there to worry about, wild dogs http://www.captaindaves.com/buckshot/dogs.htm theres a great website for some stuff to think about with feral dogs. other people trying to kill you for your stuff. So yah armor is gonna be a must nomater how hot it gets. or the nature of zombies i'm going to be wareing a lvl 3 NIJ rated vest, yes i have one, i'd like some plates for it but they're cost prohibitive. no thats not the only armor i plan to ware before you mention how a vest wont do jack against dogs and zombies
